This beautifully hand-painted Japanese set was exported during the late Taisho to early Showa periods with workman's marks (or factory tally marks) in an effort to save on labor costs. With figures in traditional kimonos, heavy use of iron-red, gold gilt, and eggshell porcelain, this cup features Japanese craftsmanship designed to impress Western buyers fascinated with delicate, lightweight china - a term titled "Japonisme." If you admire the art of the far east, or want a standout feature for your garden - this piece is absolutely for you.
